8 Day Kenya’s Land of Lava Safari

This safari takes you through Tsavo West National Park is famously known for it is ‘Man Eaters’ referring to the Lions that terrorized the builders of the railway in Tsavo during the colonial times. Chaimu Crater: It is located in Tsavo West National Park. It also takes you throgh Chaimu Crater which is the youngest volcanic crater as it last erupted about 200 years ago.

  • Day 1: Arrival- Tsavo West National Park

    You will be met by your driver guide and office representative at your pick up point. You will receive a tour briefing before departure to Tsavo West National Park. You will arrive in good time for lunch. You will have some leisure time till 1600hours when you go have a game drive. You will return in the evening for overnight.

    Tsavo West National Park: is famously known for it is ‘Man Eaters’ referring to the Lions that terrorized the builders of the railway in Tsavo during the colonial times. When combined with Tsavo East National Park they make the largest National Park in Kenya. Major attractions in this park are recent Volcanoes, caves, lava flows, Mzima Springs and under water fish and Hippo watching. The wildlife in this area is Lions, Elephants, Cheetahs, Leopards, Hyenas, Jackals, Giraffes, Zebras, Buffalos, Crocodiles, Mongoose, several species of Antelopes and abundant birdlife.

    Day 2: Chaimu Crater Exploration

    After having your breakfast, you will proceed with picnic lunch boxes to Chaimu Crater which is within the park. You will hike up the summit which is not as easy but possible due to the slippery ground. Once at the summit, your hard work is rewarded by the breathtaking view of the park and its surroundings. After that you will descend the crater and have your picnic lunch as you relax due to the strenuous climb. You will the return to your overnight accommodation to relax and later in the evening have your dinner.

    Chaimu Crater: It is located in Tsavo West National Park. It is the youngest volcanic crater as it last erupted about 200 years ago. Climbing the crater to the rim is possible but not easy because the black lava is brittle and has no plants therefore it could be slippery while doing the climb. The climb is safe from wild animals as it is also hard for them to climb that type of terrain. The view from the summit is spectacular and rewarding after a hard working climb. The best time to do the hike is in the morning since the heat on the residue track becomes harsh as the sun rises. The hike takes approximately 3-4 hours to the summit and back to the foot of the crater.

    Day 3: Tsavo West- Tsavo East National Park

    After having your breakfast, you will have a leisure drive to Tsavo East National Park. After having lunch and some leisure time, you will go for an afternoon game drive at 1600hours till sunset returning to your overnight accommodation.

    Tsavo East National Park: also known as the‘theatre of the wild’ is the Largest compared to Tsavo West National Park. The Park is known to have some of the largest Elephant herds which are a sight to behold especially when they roll and spray themselves with water from the Galana River. The wild game found in this area is the same with those in Tsavo West Park. Other attractions in the park include the Mudanda rock which has a natural dam that attracts Elephants and the Lugard’s fall which is infested with Crocodiles.

    Day 4: Tsavo East Safari

    You will have a full day to explore this vast park. You will have a 0630hrs morning game drive returning to the camp for breakfast. After lunch and some leisure time, you will go for an afternoon game drive at 1600hours till evening.

    Day 5: Tsavo East-Amboseli National Park

    After having your breakfast, you will depart for Amboseli National Park. You will arrive in good time for a sumptuous meal and have some leisure time. At 1600hours you will go have an afternoon game drive to explore the park till evening.

    Amboseli National Park: Amboseli in Maasai language means “place of water”. The park has an endless supply of water which is filtered through thousands of meters of volcanic rock from Mount Kilimanjaro. Vast herds of elephants, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes and impalas are the main attraction. Mt Kilimanjaro forms the backdrop of this game sanctuary and it is a sight to see and marvel at Amboseli.

    Day 6: Amboseli Safari

    You will have a full day to enjoy what the park has to offer. You will have a 0630hrs morning game drive returning to the camp for breakfast. You will have time at leisure until lunch. Later at 1600hrs you will have an afternoon game drive until late in the evening.

    Day 7: Amboseli-Karura Forest

    After having your breakfast, you will depart for Karura Forest via Nairobi with picnic lunch boxes to explore the caves and the waterfall. You will first have your lunch at a picnic site then proceed for the hike in the afternoon. After enjoying the hike, you will be driven to your overnight accommodation to relax. Dinner will be on own arrangement.

    Meals and overnight: City Hotel (BB)

    Karura Forest:  is endowed with wildlife ranging from mammals, reptiles, birds and insects.

    The mammals include: Porcupines, Bush babies, Hares, Bush pigs, Genet cats, Civets, ground squirrels, Colobus monkeys and Grimm’s Duiker. The reptiles include: monitor lizards, green snakes and pythons. The birds include: the African crowned eagle, owls, Cranes, sparrows, vultures and doves. The insects include the butterflies. For cave exploration and seeing the waterfall, you will walk a few kilometers from the Forest gate and encounter on the way a signpost pointing to a trail on the right leading to the caves. You will follow the trail and reach the Karura River which you will follow its course and after some few meters you will see the caves. These caves were not only used for religious purposes but were also a place of hideout for the Mau Mau freedom fighters. The Karura waterfall is found 1 kilometer away from the caves. Activities that one can engage in include: walks, cycling, jogging, tree planting, game viewing, bird watching, Tennis, Horse riding and dog walking (however certain guidelines should be followed when undertaking this activity.     Day 8: Departure

    After having your breakfast, the driver guide will transfer you to the airport in good time for your onward flight or transfer you to your drop off point.
