SAMBURU
, SHABA AND BUFFALO SPRINGS:
Its takes
approximately 6 hours to drive to Samburu National Reserve from
Nairobi. Located about 340km North of Nairobi. Samburu is a
semi-arid region and water is scarce the only source of water is
he Ewaso Nyiro River that supports three great Northern Reserve,
Samburu Buffalo Springs and Shaba. This is a
spectacular country of rugged terrain set against a backdrop of
mighty hills and covering an area of about 300sqkm
Along the
Ewaso Nyiro is a riverline forest forming a contrast of the arid
thorn studded plains. Large herds of elephants are drawn into
the reserve by the promise of water. During the dry season,
elephants use their tasks to dig deep into the dry river beds to
unearth the precious commodity. There waterholes then become a
meeting point for other game thus creating a grand reception for
visitors to come there.
There are five
special species endemic to this region namely the Gerenuk (mini
Giraffe) Gravy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe and
the Oryx.
The forest
along the river banks are home to many birds and leopards often
seen at dusk. Lions are also frequently seen and cheetahs can be
found on the open plains. On rare occasion, parks of African
hunting dogs are sighted passing through the reserve.
Shaba was
where Joy Adamson author of Born free spent her final days. More
recently Shaba served as the location for the hit series
“survivor Africa” which pitted its contestants against the
challenge of this wild Africa.
The entire
Samburu region is a place of breathtaking and magical beauty. A
place where the vision of deep red sunset silhouetting along the
river on the background forming a sea of fire brings the perfect
and to day in the wilderness.
Ewaso Nyiro is
also an important water source for the Samburu Villages
surrounding the reserves. Their culture is truly fascinating,
sharing a great deal of raring camels, goats and cows and are
often seen bringing their animals to drink water. By the way,
they believe that all cows in the world belong to them.
There are
other several private sanctuaries working closely with Samburu
to protect both their tribal lands and local wildlife. These
sanctuaries are open to guests and are as a well worth
visiting.
How to get
there

Buffalo Springs and Shaba are all accessible by road via Isiolo
